The Acadia University Art Gallery presents a selection of work by the late folk artist, Francis DaSilva, coordinated by the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre.
This exhibition presents the work of DaSilva (1841-1920), a Portuguese sailor who, in the early 1860s, settled in Hantsport. DaSilva worked for the Churchill family in a variety of roles: gardener, coachman and handyman. He also painted murals in buildings on the Churchill property.
The works on view at Acadia showcase DaSilva’s early landscapes and animals, but also his interest in the political climate of the period, when Confederation and other political issues were debated in communities across the region.
The exhibition is on view from July 17 to Sept. 1. The town of Hantsport, R&G’s Family Restaurant, Cochrane's Pharmasave and the Valley Credit Union have supported this exhibition.
